How to Print Passport Photos at the Right Size
Print the 4 x 6 inch sheet at 100% (actual size), with fit-to-page and scaling turned off, then measure a photo with a ruler: it must be exactly 2 x 2 inches.
The size the print must be
- Each photo: 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm).
- Head (chin to top of head) must be 50% to 69% of the photo height (1 to 1 3/8 inches in a 2x2 inch photo).
Print settings
- Make your photo and download the 4 x 6 inch sheet (JPG or PDF). It holds six US 2x2 inch photos with cut lines.
- Choose 4 x 6 inch photo paper in the print dialog. (Passport911 tip, not an official rule)
- Set the scale to 100% or Actual size. Turn off Fit to page, Fit to frame, Shrink to fit and similar options. (Passport911 tip, not an official rule)
- Choose borderless printing if your printer offers it. (Passport911 tip, not an official rule)
- If you have no 4 x 6 inch paper, print the PDF at 100% on larger photo paper and cut the sheet out. (Passport911 tip, not an official rule)
Measure before you cut
- Measure one photo with a ruler. It must be 2 x 2 inches.
- If it is smaller or larger, the printer scaled the sheet. Check the scale setting and print again. (Passport911 tip, not an official rule)
- Cut along the lines with a paper trimmer or a ruler and a sharp blade for straight edges. (Passport911 tip, not an official rule)
Printing at a store
You can also order a 4 x 6 inch print of the sheet at a pharmacy photo counter. Ask for the print as it is, with no cropping or resizing.
Frequently asked questions
What size should a printed US passport photo be?
Exactly 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm), with the head measuring 1 to 1 3/8 inches from chin to top of head.
Why did my passport photos print too small?
The printer probably scaled the sheet to fit the page. Print at 100% or Actual size with fit-to-page turned off.
Can I print passport photos at home?
Yes. Print the 4 x 6 inch sheet at 100% on photo paper, measure a photo, then cut along the lines.
Does passing the checker mean my photo will be accepted?
No. Passport911 checks your photo against published requirements, but final acceptance is decided by the issuing agency.
